VHS & camcorder tapes, saved to digital.

the big plastic bricks of the 80s and 90s

A stack of VHS camcorder tapes with blank labels in warm window light
videotape

Between the first VCRs and the last MiniDV camcorders, Alaskan families recorded thirty years of birthdays, fish camps, and first steps onto magnetic tape. Every one of those tapes can become a clean MP4 file you can watch, copy, and share.

Why now

What time does to videotape

The signal fades

Magnetic tape weakens with age. The recorded signal literally fades, and with it the color and sound.

Sticky-shed syndrome

The binder that holds the magnetic layer can absorb moisture over the decades, shedding oxide onto the player heads. Archivists call it sticky-shed syndrome.

The players are vanishing

Working players are disappearing. Every year it gets harder to find a machine, a belt, or a head in good condition.

The rate

Tapes under 1 hour
$19 per tape
Tapes over 1 hour
$29 per tape
Volume discount
5% past 20 tapes, 10% past 50

Video and audio tapes count toward the same volume discount, even mixed formats. Other formats quoted by the studio.

Worth knowing before you drop off

  • Store tapes upright, fully rewound, away from speakers, magnets, and damp garages.
  • Don't force a jammed tape. A crumpled section can often be repaired, but only if it isn't torn further.
  • The T-number on a VHS label is its length in minutes at standard speed. Recorded in EP mode, a T-120 can hold up to 6 hours and a T-160 up to 8.

Quick answers

My tape was recorded in EP or LP mode. Does that matter?

Only for the length. A T-120 recorded in EP mode can hold up to 6 hours, which takes the over-1-hour rate and a little more drive space. The transfer itself handles any speed.

Can you fix a broken or jammed VHS tape?

Usually, yes. Tape repair is one of our standard services, and one badly deteriorated 27-year-old tape came back watchable here after another local studio could not play it. Bring it in before trying to fix it yourself.

What file do I get back?

A high-quality MP4 for each tape, delivered on a thumb drive, a download link, or DVD, your choice.
